You can either download the update OTA or go through the guide to install the update manually on your LG Nexus 5. You can also root LG Nexus 5 later on Android 6.0.1 MMB29X Marshmallow.
The guide mentioned below is only for LG Nexus 5 and is not compatible with any other device. To know the model number of your device go to Settings >> About Phone.

Update Nexus 5 to Android 6.0.1 MMB29X Marshmallow Official Factory Image
Take a complete backup of data,apps and settings as the procedure may wipe your data.
Make sure that the battery of device has a minimum charge of 60%.
Enable “USB debugging” on your device by going to Settings >> Developer options >> Enable USB debugging.
Download Android 6.0.1 Factory Image (hammerhead-MMB29X-factory-6356d31e.tgz) for Nexus 5 on your computer.
Connect your Nexus 5 to your computer using the USB cable.
Fastboot should be configured and properly installed on your computer.
Switch off your device.
Enter Fastboot/Bootloader Mode on your phone. Turn ON the phone while pressing and holding the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons till you see the Fastboot menu and START on top.
Extract the downloaded file on your computer. Go to the folder hammerhead-MMB29X and copy all the files to your Fastboot directory.
To flash the factory image to your Nexus 5. From the factory image files in your Fastboot directory do the following:
Windows: Run the file “flash-all.bat”.
Mac: Run the file “flash-all.sh” using Terminal.
Linux: Run the file “flash-all.sh”.
Wait till the process gets complete, your Nexus 5 will reboot now.
